History of 2300

About 2300

The story of the stunning, mid-century modern, highrise building known to many as simply “2300” begins over 50 years ago – with a different name.

Plans announced in late 1957 for a $4-million, 16-20 story, luxury apartment building referred to 2300 as the Park Apartments.  It was then that developer Raymond D. Nasher and the Dallas architectural firm Harrell and Hamilton unveiled plans offering “country living in the city.”

In 1963 Harrell and Hamilton were recognized with a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects for their design. The same year a Tulsa World headline announced “Cliff Dwellers Return.”  Reporter Bill Butler used the phrase to describe “folks feathering their nests in new buildings growing up like Johnson Grass around Tulsa.”  The image Butler painted was of those leaning over their balconies, taking a dip in the heated swimming pool, and watching someone else mow the lawn!

Indeed each level of 2300 is surrounded by a continuous ring of balconies.  Coffered overhangs and railings, which extend below the concrete ledge, give rhythm to the look of the plentiful outdoor living space.

It wasn’t until 1976 when the rental property was converted to condominiums that the building became known by its address on Riverside Drive: 2300.

Early marketing materials referred to a beautifully landscaped setting with a formal entrance attended by a a 24-hour doorman, a handsomely appointed first-floor dining room and  “party room” with glimmering terrazzo floors and an oversized, heated pool.  Private residencies included spacious indoor and outdoor living areas with magnificently equipped kitchens. Today residents still enjoy all these amenities and more in a building truly enjoying a Resainnance and still very much in demand.

When realtors say “location, location, location,” they must be referring to 2300.  The property is ideally situated on a 5.2-acre site along the Arkansas River, within steps of Tulsa RiverParks and the upcoming, highly anticipated Gathering Place.  Immediately south of the historic Harwelden Mansion, 2300 offers views of the heart of downtown Tulsa to the north and Utica Square is but a 4 minutes drive to the east.
